This means that 100% of the food production process will be organic and all foods produced by The New Vertical Farm will be eligible for the "100% organic" label. The company's farm will have a capacity sufficient to produce in excess of 129,000 lbs. of basil per year. When we look at what is happening to the Floral and Bedding plant industry in the US, we must consider future projects have to begin with technology and innovation to sustain this industry. The propagation and growing methods that have been developed in the past are now no longer relevantly efficient, when it comes to large scale production that is necessary in sustaining the masses. When a large venture is under consideration at the start or whether an established facility is faced with retooling its out dated equipment, serious considerations need to be faced right from the start. The already existing green houses and nurseries will have to adapt to change in order maintain their existence and status quo. The floral industry in the US today cannot produce a wholesale product at a profit without a substantial loss when the material costs out weight the income. Greater is the loss when large corporations refuse to do point of sale contracts and hire knowledgeable staff for plant sales while at the same time leaving the grower accountable for the loss after the product has left the facility. The only alternative way the Floral and Bedding plant operations in the US will be able to compete with the international markets is to change, by reducing the costs of production, enabling them to “step up” and take back the control of their market and take control of the imports that are spreading new strains of infestation into our country. The only way to reduce usage and expenses is to minimize the most labor intensive and costly items, starting with: 1. The watering: both in labor, equipment, treatment, application methods and usage. 2. The media: both in the labor of mixing and the processing of sterilization. 3. The plug trays: Eliminating the need for the smaller sized units that are made of plastics that remain inconsistent in size and strength as these items are proprietary to the manufacturer, where no accountability or recycling systems exist for these products that are overwhelming the landfills. 4. The energy: In minimizing wasted resources as higher prices in gas and electricity continue to escalate globally. 5. The space: by minimizing the space it takes to store the products, materials, tools and equipment, while maintaining adequate space for safe mobility of workers within a facility, as all of this space is not factored into the equation when calculating the profits from the product. 6. The land maintenance: as traditional methods require constant monitoring and additional amendments for conditioning, while simultaneously the land is being depleted, eroded and polluted from the leaching of chemicals and fertilizers. In minimizing all of the above factors Time and Money are the components that determine the rate of change, change being the one true constant.
